Some individuals use a question as a way to deflect from a topic or avoid giving a direct response, especially if they don't want to reveal something or disagree with the questioner.
In these cases, the follow-up question might be a tactic to shift the focus or buy time.

You never answered the question of who could do (or have done) a better job than Trump.
All your responses are deflections about his character, his mistakes, etc. and/or the failings of others.
As I see it, Trump has several traits that are desired or necessary and no one else comes close to having them.
- Enough wealth to combat the lawfare attacks that are thrown at him.
- Desire to improve the strength and integrity of the US (i.e. Patriotic).
- Ability to negotiate.
- Courage (i.e. putting his safety and fortune on the line).
- Ability to make decisions.
- Temperament to try innovations.
- Ability to juggle multiple issues.
- Ability to navigate the political system.
- Make the most of thinning hair.
The ONLY thing he has done a decent job at is immigration....
