When the Canadian government decided to discontinue printing the $1 bill to save money among other reasons, the feeling of Canadians was that the world would stop rotating and everyone would fall off. When the dies for the new coin were sent to the Royal Mint in Winnipeg, Manitoba they used FedEx. FedEx lost track of the shipment for 3 weeks. Since the design was compromised they hurriedly created a new design.
The new design had a [Canadian] Loon on one side. As a derogatory remark Canadians called it "Loonie". (The term Christian was originally an insult!)
The press was so good that the government was smart enough to go with the flow.
So the LOONIE was born. When the $2 bill was replaced with a coin the nickname was obvious. TOONIE .
You just can't make this up.
